Context
Eye for Ear is a group of Brooklyn-based audiovisual artists creating original music, film, sculpture, and immersive experiences.
Our debut work, QUALIA, is a 14-song concept album that takes the listener on a journey from the Big Bang, through the emergence of life, past civilization, toward the edge of time. It begins with Origin.
Concept
Origin is about how all matter, space, and time were once compressed into a single quantum point. It wasn’t just the objects that moved apart, but space itself that expanded. The song highlights this shared overlapped beginning and reflects on how every “here” and “now” is now relative, scattered across a constantly unfolding universe.
Lyrics
At one point, we were one point.
All in one place, all together.
But the pressure and the heat
cast us out like scattered seeds.
Now we’re so, we’re so far away.
But we still, we still share that place.
There’s a vast expanse,
all of space and time.
You’re still there, there beside me.
I still feel you here and now.
Here and now.
Visuals
Inspired by the NASA Hubble Research that used slime mold simulations to model the flow of dark matter in the universe, we created the visuals for Origin using a Physarum simulation. This system models particle-like “agents” whose behavior we control through seeded masks that shape where and how the organisms grow and move.
We built an audio-reactive animation system and connected it to the simulation, using drum analysis and keyframed animation to drive procedural movement. These controls allow the slime-mold forms to grow, pulse, scatter, and reform with the structure of the song.
The result is a living visual field that gathers, scatters, and reconnects, echoing the image of a shared beginning spreading outward across space and time.
